Exciting engineering challenges with great prizes

Show off your skills and solve real design problems

Stratasys & KeyShot Gaming Mouse Design Competition

Once again, Stratasys is leading the way in how designers, engineers and innovators use 3D printing to solve complex challenges. In product development, time is money and quality is inseparable from reputation. That’s why Stratasys and KeyShot collaborated to create a streamlined workflow. Designers will now go from concept ideation and sketch to visualization and render to putting full, CMF detailed design models in stakeholders’ hands, faster than ever before. For this challenge, assume that you have unique access to best in class, full-color, multi-material PolyJet 3D printers; like the Stratasys J55™. With that in mind, we invite you to unleash your creativity and show us what is possible knowing that the top 15 designs will be 3D printed using a powerful system; like the J55™.

The Challenge:

Design a COMPUTER GAMING MOUSE to showcase PolyJet capabilities and you could win:

 A free 3d printed PolyJet model of your design
 A valuable voucher for printing services from Stratasys Direct Manufacturing
 A free KeyShot Pro V10 license
 Recognition and promotion in popular publications

This competition is open to designers in the United States and Canada. For this challenge, we ask you to showcase your ideas and skills, while exploring the capabilities of full color, multi-material 3D printing. To win, you must: provide a compelling, written explanation of the characteristics you are showcasing, the design inspiration (origin of where the design idea came from), and how you iterated through your design cycle. Your final submission must include this narrative along with your (3MF) and.PRINT files. This is the minimum requirement, however, the more information you supply, the better! For example, images, renderings, videos, and screenshots of the design are encouraged! To win, you must also comply with the technical design specifications provided below.

Entries will be accepted from February 1st , 2021 through March 1st. Winners will be announced on, or about March 15th

Requirements

  • JUDGING CRITERIA:

    1. Design Attractiveness and Creativity: Is the design aesthetically pleasing and does
it evoke emotion? Will it inspire other designers to use PolyJet in their design
    process?
    2. Wise utilization of PolyJet technology: Use of multi-color, multi-material and
texture capabilities. How does the design show the value of PolyJet over other 3d
printing technologies? What are the features / capabilities showcased in the design?
    3. Printability: Compatible with the specified technical specifications.
    4. Ergonomics/Utility/Believable- The design is realistic and practical for the intended
use. Final design anticipates typical manufacturing production techniques; namely
injection moldable housings.  Not necessarily production-ready, but it should be
    manufacturable.

  • TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:

    1. The design should keep the same outline geometry and general shape of the
original computer gaming mouse model, and should not exceed its dimensions (No
larger than: Length- 5.5” Width- 3” Height- 1.75”).
    2. Materials Available: Full color rigid materials, Transparent, Flexible and
    combinations of them
    3. Files must be 3d printable – watertight 3d volumes, no open surfaces.
    4. Wall thickness and feature size shall not fall below 0.02” inch
    5. Geometry with negative angles will be contacted with support material. Please
consider the support removal process while designing.

  • WHAT IS REQUIRED?

    1. A 1-2 paragraph (500 words or less) narrative about your design inspiration and
the PolyJet capabilities you are showcasing
    2. Supporting images including, but not limited to, final design rendering or image
    3. Supporting documents on the design iteration & creative process (including
previous 3D printed, hand-made mockup or sketches) to get to the final design
    4. 3D printable file submitted in 3MF and .PRINT file formats- along with a document
explaining color, durometer, or material selection

  • KEYSHOT AND 3D PRINT DESIGN BEST PRACTICES:
    File Set-up:
 Make sure the original model resolution (Tessellation) is suitable for 3D
printing. Models can appear “smooth” in KeyShot but have faceted surfaces
    when printed.
 If you are creating textures using displacement, be sure that the tolerance
between a textured part and it's nearest object is greater than the height of
the displaced texture. To correct geometry that is visibly overlapping, simply
scale down the part until the texture no longer visibly intersects.
 If you are using the same KeyShot file for both 3MF export and final image
rendering, you may want to create separate Model Sets to manage the
materials as some materials are better suited for 3D Print
o Specifically, avoid using Translucent or Scattering Medium materials
and instead use Plastic, Glass, Gem or Liquid Materials.
o For a full list of Materials to Prefer or Avoid reference the document
below, Designing in KeyShot for PolyJet 3D Printing.

 If you have not set your scene measurements inside of KeyShot you can do
    so using the export process.

  • Exporting:
When you get to the 3MF Export dialog, here are the preferred settings:
 Use a DPI that is between 400 to 600.
o KeyShot applies DPI only to textures, labels and colors.
o If you do not have textures, labels, or colors, KeyShot ignores the DPI.
o As a rule, part resolution should be higher than the printer resolution.
Currently, the default resolution in KeyShot is 400 DPI.
o Under 300 DPI the model appearance will be poor.
 The Number of samples should remain 16.
 Select the Prefer Textures option.
 If Geometry Nodes is selected, the displacement is exported as tessellated
polygons, which increases the export duration and results in a larger file size.
 Clear the Use Calculated Depth check box.
o If this option is selected, it applies the color to transparent parts
according to the thickness of each polygon. It simulates transparency
thickness when the core is clear. Clearing this check box results in a
    faster file export.

    Good morning, everyone!

I would like to comment on the fact that the competition is not open to people outside of US & Canada.

First of all I admit that I don't understand why this restriction but at the end it's not what shocks me the most.

What shocks me and what annoys me is that to be able to do this contest, I filled out like many people I suppose a form on the Stratasys site that also organizes the contest to be able to participate.
If it had been clear from the beginning that only the people of the US & Canada could participate, I would never have filled out this form.
I find it dishonest and unclear.
This is yet another way to collect personal data and pollute newsletter mailboxes.

Personally I am tired of this systematic process and once again if I had known from the beginning that I could not participate I would never have filled out this form.

What interests me is the design and the possibility of being able to express myself through a competition...not to give information about me to a company that doesn't interest me to finally learn that you can't participate!

Sorry to say that here but I think you should know.

I hope Stratasys will take responsibility for this by not sending me any e-mails or newsletters that I didn't want at first.
It's not to me to unregister when I haven't asked for anything.

Good luck to all for the contest!
I am sure that incredible designs will be presented!!!

    Hi,
I was also very confused when I read today that I cannot enter the contest because I am not a resident of the USA or Canada. Nothing was written about it in the form that I filled in the Strarasys Linkedin page... I am very disappointed because I wanted to take part in this contest and recommended it to my colleague.
Good luck to the organizers and participants.

I tried my best to help people in this community and grabcad itself to get better in anything. Over the years such things happen and happen again. I don't know the percentage of US/CAN users here on GC... but this goes against the idea behind this great thing called Grabcad and what iit meant for us in the first place: Bringing engineers/designer/cad-user from all the world together. Major reason for me my efforts run dry. Not the GC when I joined and was proud to be part of.

Don't bother guys, what here is happening is called ceap buyng of good ideas. The best idea will very probably don't get any attention from the jury. Because everybody here published the entire idea all this ideas aren't your propriety any more. How do you want sue somebody who will use your idea, or a slightly modified version, somewhere on the world? Each one of you is a target of ruthless exploitation.
For maximum 1700$? This is all what you can see if your design, or one based on your idea, will be produced and get successful. No profit-sharing, only 700-1700$, if you are lucky. Seriously?

    Hello everyone,
I understand that this is a Challenge that is for the USA and Canada regions. While it is frustrating for some please keep these comments out of the comment sections. Let's allow this challenge to have our amazing community members make great models for a chance to win great prizes. Any more comments like this will result in either a suspension or ban from GrabCAD and future Challenges

FROM KESA : "Any more comments like this will result in either a suspension or ban from GrabCAD and future Challenges"

I'm sorry, but I have to say we're free to say what we want when we want it and that even if Grabcad is not okay.
It is part of the wealth of having a large community of people gathering around the same concept.

I like Grabcad a lot and I've been enrolled for a long time because I like this idea of sharing and exchanging.
I have participated and even won competitions on Grabcad and I find it incredible to have the chance to do this with returns from a community around the world.

Telling people to stop speaking out on a subject on which we disagree is called censorship.
Telling people that you will close their account and that they will be banned is called censorship.
Such methods are clearly from another time and do not, in my view, reflect the original spirit of Grabcad and his community.

I'm sorry, but this kind of comment really makes me want to leave and never participate in this community again.

Come on! Close my account, banish me!

I thought Grabcad would understand my point of view, but if you prefer censorship to dialogue, it's your choice and I respect it, but it's the opposite of federating a community!

    Hello everyone,
This challenge is set up by the Challenge Sponsors Keyshot and Stratasys. The rules of who can participate in any GrabCAD Challenge is determined by the Challenge Sponsor and agreed upon by the GrabCAD team. This challenge is limited to the Unites States and Canada due to several factors.

    1. Stratasys Direct Manufacturing (SDM) is a manufacturing service that creates your designs for you on Stratasys printers and their materials as well as traditional manufacturing technology. The SDM source we are using ships only to US and Canada thus this challenge is currently limited to these regions.

    2. All 15 finalists will be receiving a 3D printed PolyJet model of their design. These models are being printed and produced here in the United States, so due to shipping limitations Stratasys can only ship these models to the US and Canada.
We are sorry that our international community will not be able to participate in this challenge but please understand that this is only due to budget and shipping limitations. Please be on the lookout for another great challenge coming soon that will be open to the whole GrabCAD Community.

    Thank you

This is Grab"CAD", shouldn't this be about a CAD mouse? The market is saturated with Gaming mice. Our only option is the super mediocre 3DCONNEXION CAD mouse. Design a mouse that has a Esc button so that people wouldn't have to use their keyboards. Solidworks users can benefit from this.
I was an early adapter, had a Stratasys machine in the late 90's - pricey. This being a subtly disguised advert for the J55, I doubt anything useful would come out of this.

Stratasys invested in GrabCAD hoping to market their products. It may take a long long time to see their ROI.
